November is National Adoption Month! At Every Child, we are an affiliate agency of the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN), which serves children in the custody of county children and youth agencies. Our SWAN program provides services, free of charge, to families who have provided permanency through adoption, formal kinship, or legal guardianship. We assist the family to identify strengths, establish goals, and locate community resources for ongoing support.
This year’s theme focuses on youth engagement and the need to achieve permanency for older youth. There are thousands of teenagers across the country currently in the foster care system who need permanent family connections to carry them into adulthood. The many barriers to achieving permanency for older youth often results in the focus being shifted to preparing them for independent living instead of finding adoptive families. Additionally, many older youth may be reluctant to pursue adoption for various reasons, including feelings of grief, loyalty for their family, emotional trauma, and the desire for independence.
